Quick Poverty References

We're always on the lookout for great resources, and we will highlight our favorites from time to time. Two that we like for teaching about or acting to eliminate poverty are:
  • The End of Poverty, by Jeffery Sachs. Publisher's Weekly describes it as, "...a landmark book... If there is any one work to put extreme poverty back onto the global agenda, this is it."
  • Room to Read is a dynamic, results-oriented organization. Since its inception as a non-profit entity in 2000, they have impacted the lives of over 755,000 children.

Shout from the roof tops! We made a difference!

Have you thought about letting your community know about the great action plan your school is implementing? Here are some ideas about how you can get the word out:
  • Contact local tv news and radio stations
  • Send a 'press release' to you town papers, town hall and area businesses
  • Write it up in the end of year paper
  • Make an announcement over the school P.A. system

What is an IFE Fellow and how can I become one?

Twenty-five IFE fellows led the Call to Action to eliminate poverty in 2005-2006. Between November and February, the group came together to visit organizations such as The World Bank, Martha's Table, The ARC, Ashoka, and the International Center for Research on Women. During these visits, they learned about the reaches of poverty both locally and globally. At the 2006 CIE Symposium, IFE Fellows demonstrated their expertise by introducing JF Rischard and by calling on fellow students and teachers to join them in learning about and eliminating poverty through action.

Each IFE Fellow must commit to a regular time of involvement and in exchange receives the prestige of being a Fellow as well as a small grant. Want to nominate a student to the 2006-2007 IFE Fellow? Visit the IFE Fellows Information Page or send an email to fellows@cie-wis.org.
